Hi, I’m Phil

I’m an accountant turned Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central consultant, based in Jersey. This blog is where I write up what I learn delivering real ERP and finance-systems projects — the practical stuff, not the brochure version.

From the finance side of the desk

I didn’t start in IT — I started in finance. I’m an ACCA-qualified accountant, and I spent the early part of my career in management and group accounting roles: producing the accounts, running budgets and consolidations, and eventually leading the finance function as a Group Financial Controller. That grounding still shapes how I work. I’ve sat on the side of the desk that has to close the month, reconcile the numbers and stand behind them at audit.

…to the systems behind it

For more than a decade now I’ve worked the other side — designing and delivering the systems finance teams rely on. My focus is Microsoft Dynamics NAV and its successor, Dynamics 365 Business Central, with the wider Microsoft stack alongside it: the Power Platform, Power BI and Azure. I tend to cover the whole lifecycle — pre-sales and scoping, solution design, AL development and extensions, data migration, integrations, reporting, and the training that actually gets people using the thing.

Along the way I’ve delivered projects across a broad mix of sectors — utilities, construction and property, distribution, financial services and the public sector — for organisations in the UK, the Channel Islands and further afield.

The bit I enjoy most

It’s the overlap. Plenty of people understand the accounting, and plenty understand the software; the useful work happens in the space between the two — turning a finance requirement into a clean, maintainable Business Central solution without losing either the accounting rigour or the technical simplicity. I’m a Microsoft Certified Trainer and hold a range of Microsoft certifications across Business Central, the Power Platform, Azure and Power BI, plus Certified ScrumMaster — but the qualification I lean on most day to day is still the ACCA.

Business Central consultancy

End-to-end Dynamics 365 Business Central delivery — scoping, solution design, business analysis, training and support.

AL development & integration

Building Business Central extensions, customisations and integrations, with Power Platform, Power BI and Azure alongside.

A finance foundation

An ACCA-qualified accountant and former Group Financial Controller — so the numbers come first, not just the software.

Why this blog

This site is where I share field-tested notes from real projects: finance processes in Business Central, AL development, integrations and reporting, NAV-to-Business-Central migrations, and where AI and Copilot actually fit into the day job. It’s the stuff I wish I’d known earlier — written down in case it saves you the detour.
